Hours pass during which the Alpha and his men leave, and Mom coaxes me to eat raw hamburger left over from dinner. Once it’s clear I’m in control of my instincts and won’t bite anyone, Dad helps me learn my new wolf form, holding on to my middle while he teaches me how to walk on all fours and use my new tail for balance.

When I grow tired, Mom brings more food, feeding me links of sausage.

Eventually, I manage to make my way to my room and curl up on the carpet at the foot of my bed. Dad sits next to me, stroking the fur between my ears, as I drift off to sleep.

In my dreams, I run through the woods, chasing a deer. I have far more grace here, bounding over brushes and around trees, muscles bunching and stretching, strong and powerful in my wolf form.

I pause, my steps slowing, and allow the deer to escape as a sense of curiosity sweeps through me, followed by delight.

Then, I’m running again, trees zipping past. I marvel at how clear everything is, even at night, how I see farther, taking in more of my surroundings, my peripheral vision expanding. I smell the paths squirrels took earlier, know where they hid their nuts in the forest floor.

An owl swoops from a tree ahead of me, followed by the sharp squeak of mouse, before it flies away, it’s dinner perfuming the air with the scent of blood.

A coyote yips from somewhere else in the woods, and I turn toward it, my paws silent on the forest floor as I hunt for my smaller brethren. I catch sight of pointed ears and a bushy tail before a new noise distracts me. Laughter. Human laughter.

Slowing to a trot, I head toward the noise. Soon, firelight flickers through the tree branches. A campfire.

Glee shoots through me as I step out into the open.
